About Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a toy breed with a royal heritage, beloved for its affectionate nature, elegant appearance, and gentle temperament. With roots tracing back to 17th-century England, the breed was a favorite companion of British nobility—most notably King Charles II, after whom the breed is named. Portraits from that era often depict small spaniels lounging beside their aristocratic owners, highlighting the breed’s long-standing role as a cherished lapdog.

Over time, the original toy spaniel’s features evolved through crossbreeding with flat-nosed breeds like the Pug, giving rise to the King Charles Spaniel (known in the U.S. as the English Toy Spaniel). However, in the early 20th century, breed enthusiasts sought to revive the longer-muzzled spaniel seen in older paintings. Their efforts led to the creation of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which was officially recognized as a distinct breed by The Kennel Club in the U.K. in 1945 and by the American Kennel Club in 1995.

Today, Cavaliers are known for their expressive eyes, silky coats, and warm, people-loving personalities. They thrive on companionship and are happiest when close to their humans—whether curled up on the couch or trotting alongside them on a walk. They’re well-suited for families, seniors, and individuals alike, and they typically get along well with children and other pets.

Cavaliers come in four recognized color patterns: Blenheim (chestnut and white), Tricolor (black, white, and tan), Ruby (solid red), and Black & Tan. They are small, typically weighing between 13–18 pounds, and require regular grooming to keep their coats healthy and mat-free.

Beyond their beauty and charm, Cavaliers are intelligent and eager to please, making them relatively easy to train. They adapt well to various lifestyles—content in both city apartments and rural homes—so long as they receive love and attention. While they are generally healthy, potential owners should be aware of breed-specific health concerns, including heart conditions like mitral valve disease, which responsible breeders screen for.

Whether you’re looking for a loyal companion, a gentle playmate for your children, or a sweet-natured addition to your family, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel offers all the grace of royalty with the heart of a true best friend.
